1.corpse (n.)a dead body, usually of a person


2.sepulchral (a.)suggesting death or places where the dead are buried:
The curtain rose to reveal a gloomy, sepulchral set for the play.


3.tug (v.)to pull something quickly and usually with a lot of force:
Tom tugged at his mother's arm.


4.quench (v.)to satisfy your thirst by having a drink:
When it's hot, it's best to quench your thirst with water.

6.stain (v.)to leave a mark on something which is difficult to remove:

16.wail (v.) to make a long, high cry, usually because of pain or sadness:
The women gathered around the coffin and began to wail, as was the custom in the region.

17.servile (a.)too eager to serve and please someone else in a way that shows a lack of respect for yourself:
As a waiter you want to be pleasant to people without appearing totally servile.


18.trial (n.)the hearing of statements and showing of objects, etc. in a court of law to judge whether a person is guilty of a crime or to decide a case

Trial by jury is a fundamental right.
It was a very complicated trial that went on for months.
She's going on/standing trial for fraud.


19.contrive (v.)to arrange a situation or event, or arrange for something to happen, using clever planning:
Couldn't you contrive a meeting between them? I think they'd be ideally suited.
[+ to infinitive] Somehow she contrived to get tickets for the concert.


20.pursuer (v.)to follow someone or something, usually to try to catch or kill them:
The car was pursued by helicopters.
The hunters spent hours pursuing their prey.
He was killed by the driver of a stolen car who was being hotly pursued by the police.


21.villainy (n.)Villainy is very bad or criminal behaviour. (FORMAL)
They justify every villainy in the name of high ideals.


22.accuser (n.)An accuser is a person who says that another person has done something wrong, especially that he or she has committed a crime.
...a criminal proceeding where defendants have the right to confront their accusers.


23.vice (n.)(a) moral fault or weakness in someone's character:
Greed, pride, envy, dishonesty and lust are considered to be vices.


24.condemn (v.)to criticize something or someone strongly, usually for moral reasons:
The terrorist action has been condemned as an act of barbarism and cowardice.
The film was condemned for its sexism.


25.contrive (v.)to arrange a situation or event, or arrange for something to happen, using clever planning:

26.harass (v.)to continue to annoy or upset someone over a period of time:

27.verdict (n.)an opinion or decision made after judging the facts that are given, especially one made at the end of a trial:

Voters gave their verdict on the government's economic record last night by voting overwhelmingly for the opposition.


28.demigod (n.)(in ancient stories) a being who is partly human and partly a god:
Some football players become like demigods to their fans.

Growth in car ownership could be restrained by increasing taxes.


33.remnant (n.)a small piece or amount of something that is left from a larger original piece or amount:

34.quotation (v.)to repeat the words that someone else has said or written:
He's always quoting from the Bible.
"If they're flexible, we're flexible", the official was quoted as saying.
She worked, to quote her daughter, "as if there was no tomorrow".
Can I quote you on that (= Can I repeat to other people what you have just said)?


35.scrap (v.)to not continue with a system or plan:
They're considering scrapping the tax and raising the money in other ways.
We scrapped our plans for a trip to France.
